Some males may have excessive breast tissue that they find unsightly, or that makes them feel self- conscious. The medical term for this condition is gynecomastia. In the first instance, it is important to get a full medical check up to ensure that there is no hormonal cause to the problem. In addition, Dr Rita will take a full medical history, and perform a full physical examination to exclude more sinister causes. This may include further imaging tests such as ultrasounds, mammograms, or even biopsies.
Once more sinister causes are excluded, there are two to three main techniques available for the treatment of gynecomastia, depending on its severity:
For a minor amount of tissue, the best approach is liposuction, with near invisible tiny scars. For a moderate amount of tissue, combined liposuction and surgical removal of the excess tissue is possible – with a small scar hidden around the nipple. For more extensive tissue, a formal breast reduction operation would be recommended, although this would leave more visible scars on the breast, and is a much more complex procedure.
