Breast Pain
Breast pain can affect many women at some time in their lives. It is very common and only in very rare cases is it associated with breast cancer.

Breast Lumps
Common Causes of benign breast lumps can be:
  • Fibroadenomas
  • Cysts
  • Hamartomas
  • Lipomas
  • Mastitis and Breast Abscesses
  • Breast bruising and trauma (often termed ‘Fat Necrosis’)

Fibroadenomas
Fibroadenomas are harmless lumps of glandular and fibrous tissue and often have a very specific feel to a breast surgeon together with a very particular look on ultrasound. Fibroadenomas do not increase the risk of breast cancer. They are usually detected by physical Examination, mammogram, or breast ultrasound.
Any fibroadenoma with atypical features on assessment requires diagnosis by Core Biopsy.

Breast Cysts
Cysts are fluid sacs in the breast tissue.
Patients can be assured that a benign cyst does not significantly increase their risk of breast cancer. Atypical or symptomatic cysts may require aspiration under the guidance of ultrasound.

Nipple Discharge
Spontaneous nipple discharge unrelated to pregnancy or breastfeeding is considered abnormal. In most cases, it has a non-cancerous cause. Nipple discharge that is associated with other symptoms such as a lump in the breast or ulceration or inversion of the nipple needs prompt investigation, even if it is not spontaneous or blood-stained.

Phyllodes Tumour
A soft tissue tumour of the supporting tissue of the breast, which can be benign, borderline, or less commonly frankly malignant. The mainstay of management is adequate surgical excision with a margin of normal tissue to prevent recurrence. Depending on the size of the tumour, this may occasionally require mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

Other Conditions
Lactational breast problems, inflammatory breast conditions, congenital breast disorders such as asymmetry, hypomastia, tuberous breasts, breast hypertrophy, accessory breast, and all cosmetic breast conditions etc.
